Meet our team
Chris Hession | Managing Director
So how on earth did I end up doing this ridiculous job then?! Following a very near miss with a career in aviation via a painful Degree in Physics of all things, I found myself auditioning to be a weather presenter in BBC Birmingham. Really, don’t ask. This eventually led to work at BBC Birmingham in local radio in 2003. Following this I studied Music Production for 2 years, built a home music studio (a very grand title for what it actually was) and subsequently moved back to the BBC to work with Janice Long at BBC Radio 2 in Birmingham as a Broadcast Assistant.
Janice recommended me to a Promotions team in London and this led to a full time job as a National Radio Plugger. I stayed there for 5 years before leaving to set up my own company in 2009; the very orange Hesso Media. We work with a broad range of artists old and new, signed and unsigned. When we take an unsigned artist from a grass roots level right through to the A-list playlist rotation level, it really is the best feeling in the world as we’ve been part of the whole development and the journey. That last sentence has a distinct whiff of fromage about it, doesn’t it? But it’s true.
One of the best parts of the job is being able to offer advice on Radio Remixes and choices for singles. I think we’ve got pretty good at that, even if I do say so myself… Have a look at the A&R section!! This is something that we now do on a regular basis with many of our clients and have built up several excellent relationships with Record Producers.
Aside from running Hesso Media, I’ve made jingles & beds for radio and work on my productions at home (trying desperately not to sound like Ross from Friends here, HA!)…. I have no plans to promote any of the latter though, so you’re in luck there.
Tom Poole | Radio Plugger
Ever since I was moderately small, it was inevitable to me and others around me that it was the music industry where I’d probably end up. Born out of recommendations from my parents and elder family members, I quickly developed an eclectic taste in music that allowed me to appreciate a variety of genres.
It wasn’t until my time at university studying Media Production that I realised my love for radio too. This prompted me to solely study radio in my final year at university; alongside producing two weekly shows on the student radio station. After graduating I immediately began to search for a foot in the door of the music industry, and soon bagged an internship at Hesso Media. It seemed impossible to me that there was a job that combined my love for both music and radio equally…
For me, the best/most rewarding aspect of what we do is developing a new artist/band. Finding something new that deserves to be heard by a bigger audience, and then helping put it there. We have a good track record of this – and it’s only getting better.
Aside from my work at Hesso, I perform my own music whenever I can. It’s difficult not to be inspired when you’re working with inspiring people at all times. God, that was cheesy, wasn’t it? Actually you should have seen this before I just went through and edited it…
Ben Reynard | Radio Coordinator
Coming from a relatively unmusical family, it was a surprise that at age 11 I had a burning desire to take up the drums. Almost 10 years later and I have toured the UK (with varying degrees of success) countless times, released music with a range of artists, built a home studio, enrolled for a Music Business Degree, and then somehow ended up here at Hesso Media!
Radio for me is one of the most exciting areas of the industry – there’s nothing better than hearing a project you’ve been involved with being aired out to millions of people! When I’m not at Hesso or a gig (which is almost all the time) you can find me playing with my own band, pushing my mixing skills in Logic Pro or enjoying a cold beer in a bar in Soho or in my hometown of Harrogate.
What our clients say
Chris and Tom played a complete blinder for us on Josephine. BBC Radio 2 A-list! BBC London and BBC Manchester sessions, plus airplay on BBC 6 Music, Xfm and Jazz FM. Dedicated, tenacious and nice guys to do business with.
Roger Quail, Label Manager, Ruby Works
The Hess has introduced me to loads of new artists over the years and invites me to some brilliant showcases and gigs.
Janice Long, Broadcaster, BBC Radio 2
Hesso Media were pivotal in the rise of our new band, Palace. It was astonishing to see that during the release of the debut EP we went from plays on Radio 1's Zane Lowe and Fearne Cotton to a magnificent live session at Maida Vale with Huw Stephens. Their professionalism is also the best I have experienced.
Ali Raymond, Label Manager, Beatnik Creative
Hesso Media have been with me from Day 1... They are the reason I first got played on the radio and they still are the reason my music’s played on the radio!! Hesso Media are committed, loyal and most of all they’re really damn good at what they do.
Jack Savoretti, Artist
Hesso delivered an incredible hat-trick during 2013/14 for Matt Cardle. 3 A-list singles at BBC Radio 2 were key to Matt achieving his third Top 10 album (since winning The X Factor in 2010) including the massive hit single ‘Loving You’, a duet with Spice Girl Melanie C. Hesso Media are enthusiastic, passionate, approachable, honest and realistic. Together with their remarkable knowledge of the music industry they work together with artist, manager & label to create an A-Team, achieving only the very best results possible at radio.
Nathan Smith, Artist Manager
Always a pleasure to work with, Hesso are reliable, communicative and effective. A well organised and invaluable part of the team and no strangers to playlists.
Phil Knox-Roberts, Dharma Records
Chris and Tom have totally SMASHED our latest campaign with Jack Savoretti / Written in Scars - BBC Radio 2 Album of the Week, singles playlisted and A listed, also playlisted on Magic, Absolute and BBC London culminating in a Top 20 chart position week 1 and rising!!! They give 100% and if there is any opportunity going it’s grabbed with both hands…. what more could any label or management want??!! Amazing to work with such a dedicated team!!!!
Danielle Livesey, PUSH Music Management
You could say I’m biased because Hesso has become such a good friend of mine, but I feel like I owe my whole profile in the UK to him. He is quite literally the best there is in this country. I shouldn’t even mention it because I’m afraid to jinx it, but we’ve had 13 consecutive playlisted singles on Radio 2 together. He’s more than just a plugger too; it’s a cliché with most pluggers that they fancy themselves as music producers, but he has a proven track record when it comes to radio edits and mixes. He has an ear for melodies and hooks like some of the best writers out there. And if you’re lucky enough to work with him – because he is very principled and will not take on projects he doesn’t believe in, unlike most of the music industry – you will get someone who is passionate, connected and modern. There’s none of that “old guard” nonsense. Like I said, though, I’m probably biased. I just love the guy.
Nell Bryden, Artist
Despite Chris’s dress sense and Tom Poole’s hairstyle, Hesso are the best radio pluggers I have ever worked with. PS: Ta for the countless playlists you have got us. There are too many to count and frankly I can’t be bothered anyway.
John Lennard, Label Manager, Fullfill Records
Hesso Media are an incredible team to work with. They are always so passionate about the music and dedicated to whatever the mission is in such a fun and great away.
Katie Melua, Artist
Chris and the Hesso team attacked my campaign with dynamism and huge amounts of energy. As a result, I achieved R2 Album Of The Week, Single Of The Week and 2 successive A-lists. I cannot praise (or thank) them enough.
